Self Portrait Vol. II: Candy Flash Fiction- "Granddaddy Sweet" by Ashe
"He was mine. And all mine, at that, cuz I was the only one who loved him as he was. My Grandaddy Sweet. Not Grampa, Grandpa, Gramps, or any of that nonsense. I called him Grandaddy Sweet..."
Introducing “Self-Portrait”: Self-portraits are a necessary indulgence that can allow you to self-reflect and shift perspectives on your work. In this “Self-Portrait” portion of the “Art on My Mind” project, I want to practice the Niyama known as Svadhyaya, which is the practice of self-study and self-awareness for my own creative enrichment (more on this in my other substack,
), and to encourage others to start to challenge their own preconceptions of their work. This week, I created a series of candy charcoal compositions on toned gray paper for a school assignment. Looking back at them, I realized they could inspire countless stories, each one unique. So, I’m inviting flash fiction writers on Substack to imagine narratives inspired by these three compositions, explore the different sequences they could take, and bring their stories to life. Writers: imagine the stories these candy charcoal compositions could tell. Consider the sequences, the themes, and the worlds they might reveal. If you're inspired, post your story and I’ll start making a fun infographic as a thank you! Make sure to let me know what order you would like the photos in, or I may just resign to my creative aesthetic in connection to the story.
